During this event, led by Mass Home Care and AARP Massachusetts, elder advocacy organizations joined together to make their voices heard and encourage legislators to “Put Home Care First.” The Council was honored to join in and speak at this important event along with the following organizations: Massachusetts Senior Action Council, Massachusetts Adult Foster Care Council, Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts, Alzheimer’s Association of MA/NH, Massachusetts Reform Law Institute, Elders Living at Home, Massachusetts Aging and Mental Health Coalition Disability Advocates Advancing our Healthcare Rights (DAAHR), Jewish Community Relations Council, LGBT Aging Project, Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, Pew Charitable Trust, and the National Elder Law Attorneys MA Chapter.

The program included presentations by the newly appointed leaders of the Joint Legislative Committee on Elder Affairs – Committee Chairs Senator Barbara L’Italien (D-Andover) and Representative Danielle Gregoire (D-Marlboro) and Committee Vice-Chair Senator Julian Cyr (D-Truro).  Senator Patricia Jehlen (D-Somerville), former Chair of the Elder Affairs Committee, and Senator Tom McGee (D-Lynn) also shared remarks with the standing room only crowd.  Senator L’Italien briefly shared her personal story of helping to care for her 92-year-old mother who is suffering from dementia.  The Council is excited to report that Senator L’Italien noted her top priority for elders during the upcoming legislative session will be to advocate for our Coalition’s #EnoughPayToStay campaign.
